Dato´ Seri Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, the Prime Minister of Malaysia was elected President of ICDAIT (The United Nations Sponsored International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking) on 17 June 1987 in Vienna, Austria, thus giving due recognition to Malaysia´s pioneering and leadership role in combating international drug abuse.
This conference adopted the Comprehensive Multidisciplinary Outline of Future Activities in Drug Abuse Control and the Declaration of the International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The United Nations General Assembly also adopted 26th June as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Since 1988, members of United Nationas have been commemorating this day with various drug abuse prevention and control activities.
This year´s theme The Social and Economic Impact of Drug Abuse and Control is most appropriate as drug places an enormous burden on the society of every nation. The only solution to drug abuse is to approach the problem in a sensible and comprehensive manner.
In 1983 the Government of Malaysia declared the drug problem a threat to national security and reformulated the national drug abuse policy and strategy with the formation of the Anti Narcotics Task Force. In February 1996, the Cabinet approved the formation of the National Narcotics Agency.
The combat against drug abuse does not rest solely with the government. It requires total community involvement. Eradicating Drug Abuse is a collective responsibility.
