Malaysia has a very rich flora and there is a variety of evergreen healthy plants which grown throughout the year. Because of the tropical climate, these evergreen plants produce beautiful and impressive flowers throughtout the year thus beautifying the nature. Some of the plants are cultivated to beautify parks and gardens. Other plants are wild in nature and grow all over the places. The plants differ in sizes and shapes.
Shrubby Simpoh (Dillenia suffruticosa)
A large evergreen shrub from Malaysia, up to 7 meters high with large cabbagy leaves. This is a very common plant. The flowers have yellow petals with pale cream stamens.
Sensitive Plant (Mimosa pudica)
The senstive plant is one of the common plants found all over Malaysia. altough is came orginially from Tropical America. It has been long here and because so widespread that it is hard to believe that it is not native. This plant is well known because of its sensitive touch. The leaves shrink from a touch rapidly folding its leatflets together. It is a prickly and bristly undershrub with small leaflets of less then 13mm long. The small pink flowers are gathered into the heads at the top of a stalk about 26 mm long. The sensitive plant belongs to the Mimosa subfamily.
Pink Morning Glory (Ipomoea carnea)
A stout woody shrub and also can be climber if not pruned. A native of South America, it requires a sunny position. The leaves have wavy margins and the flowers are large of very pale pink colour propagated by woody cutting.
Waterlilies (Nymphaea pubescens)
Waterlilies are beautiful as well as usefull. They have been cultivated, from very remote times, both as food-plants and on account of the beauty of their flowers. In additio, a religious and revetent association was attached to them with Buddhism is particularly intensive. Because of this the lotus has been utilized in art for a multitude of designs,
Other waterlilies found in Malaysia include the Pink Waterlily and the Blue Waterlily. The former has white or rose-pink flowers, the latter usually has small blue flowers. The Blue Waterlily is also charactenzed by freely toothed leaves. Unlike the lotus, the leaves of these waterlilies always float on the water. Likewise, the flowers are borne on short stalks close to the surface of the water.
The waterlilies occur wild in ponds and still waters all over the country. They are sun-loving plants. Their exquisite flowers make them the most spectacular water plants.
